DAY 4 - GOOD NEWS

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begottenSon, that whoesover believes on him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

Sometimes no news really is good news. Day 4 was mostly uneventful with the exception of the babies' heart valves. When babies are in the womb, the mother helps to pump the blood through their bodies. When new babies are born, their heart has to take over all the work. It turns out that for many new borns, there can be a valve in their heart that doesn't close like it should after birth. The result is a heart murmur which is typically treated with medicine. Since both Leila and Logan had this newborn heart murmur, they both needed the medicine. Leila was started on the medicine on day 4 but Logan couldn't start on it because the Doctor had some concern about his kidneys. Of course all medicine has side effects and the heart medicine can cause kidney problems. Logan didn't have is heart checked until the next day but by then his kidneys were doing better. By the next day they were both on the heart medicine. However, we were told that this is normal for many newborns, even those that are not born pre-mature. All we can do now is wait for the God to fix my babies broken hearts while He picks up the pieces of my and Amie's broken hearts.

God reminded me today that all the pain and grief that I am going through as a Father, He has already been through. The Bible says in John 3:16 that Jesus was God's only son and that He sent Jesus to pay for our sins. Because our sinful bodies naturally sin against God and break his commandments, we must pay the death penalty (which is eternal death and separation from God, not just the physical death). Jesus paid the eternal death penalty for us by coming to Earth, living a perfect life, dying on the cross and raising from the dead the third day. All of the pain a father could possibly experience was experienced by God Almighty the day his Son died on the cross.

But there is good news, Jesus paid our penalty because he loves us so much. And now we don't have to suffer eternal death. The Bible says that anyone who calls on the Lord Jesus will receive the free gift of life. Romans 10:9,10 says, "That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation."

Just like Jesus' story is the Good News, I believe that there is good news at the end of Logan and Leila's story. I believe that God is working with the nurses and doctors every step of the way.

  1. Hi, my name is Danielle Wallin. I delivered 25 wk twins on Feb 26 via emergency C-section. Sarah was born at 10 1/2 inches and 1 lb, and Noah was 12 1/2 inch and 1lb 6 oz. Noah had the same murmur. They told us it is an extra artery that bypasses the lungs and goes to the umbilical cord to get oxygen for the blood. Noah's closed up after the three rounds of meds. I had been in the hospital for almost 5 weeks and we new things were going wrong. The day of my section Sarah's fetal distress had hit the point of delivery and I had become pre-eclampsic. Nothing really prepares you for this. The first days are such a blur with so much emotion and so many things being thrown at you. We could hardly remember our names. I did not get to see them till the next day and my heart nearly stopped when I saw how small they were. The Dr. had talked to us the day before and given Noah a 65% chance of living and they would not talk to us about Sarah. We were to scare to ask. We are coming up on two weeks now and they are doing well. Sarah has never had one hiccup except her metabolism is so fast we are having trouble with her gaining weight. That is all they are waiting on to take her off of her respirator. Noah has had more trouble with his breathing. They added a second ventilator and he is unstable with his O2 but they are very happy with how he is doing. It is hard standing there in the NICU with all the nurses and Dr.'s near by and trying to be yourself and talk to your babies. It is a bit like living your life on stage. These are babies 4 and 5 for us with 5 more in heaven. We decided to take each day as they come and let God help us through whatever each day brings. We bring some of their siblings favorite books and read to them. A simple board book or two. Young children and babies love repetition. Dr. Seuss' Mr. Brown Can Moo is a good one and they love the sounds. Things that rime and have a cadence to them are nice. We also learned to find our voices and sing to them. Noah loves to be sung to and it calms him down when he gets agitated. Caring Bridge is another great way to get info out about the babies and to post pictures. People can put in their email address and every time you update the sight it sends that update out to everyone that has signed up. This works great as word spreads and more and more prayer groups are praying for your little ones. We will be praying for you and would love to talk to you anytime. My email is danielle.wallin@gmail.com. We are at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.
